homegrown
moments where they've grown together as a family.
little things they do together daily: play on the living room floor, listen to dad play his guitar, adventure around the yard, pick veggies from the garden, eat freshly made breakfast together.
this session lives so vividly in my brain, probably because all of my senses were stimulated.
it was my first true homegrown session, I hold it very close to my heart. this session is why I am so passionate about documenting families exactly how they live, no fluff.
when John inquired with me to photograph his family on the north fork of long island, he started with this "I stumbled into Dorothy's NYC apartment with a slice of pizza and demanded a hug at first sight"– if that isn't the beginning of a romance novel, idk what is. truly.

our morning together started off with fresh coffee and homemade crumb cake (I went home with a slice, and wow...!!! so good) which naturally led to dancing together in the living room and a quick jam session while mama nursed sis.

homegrown sessions are so special.
it's where you spend most of your time.
reading together.
eating together.
playing together.

your home does not need to be perfect.
I don't want you to do a ton of cleaning up.
your house should look lived in.

the poem that hangs in astrid's nursery–
for context; Dorothy, John and Julian were on their way to a playground in Central Park when they came across a poet sitting in front of the Met. she wrote them this poem a month before Astrid was born. I think this section of the poem so perfectly describes them as a family —they watch carefully as Julian navigates everyday life with curiosity and wonder.
“a blessing for the scaramucci(s)
as they welcome
earth side a new
soul (or old,
how could we know)
to have and
to hold, to navigate
this vast and curious
life, in all its
wonder and it’s strife —“

after our play time inside, we got our boots on and headed outside into the misty, just rained weather.
Julian went straight for the garden to pick tomatoes.
mom + Julian gathered a boquet of wildflowers together.

we ended on the porch for some snuggles + said our goodbyes.
I left this session with the fullest heart.
more sessions like this, please.
