I get asked this more than almost anything else. How far along should I be for my maternity photos?
My honest answer is right when you're around 28 to 32 weeks. By then you've usually settled into your body a bit more, but you're not so far along that being on your feet for a while feels like a lot. Most moms still have energy at that point, and there's a nice cushion of time before baby arrives, so nothing feels rushed.
That's just a starting point though. Every pregnancy is different, and there's no one right week for everybody. If you're carrying multiples, measuring ahead, or you already know your body tends to get tired earlier, we just shift things up. This should work around how you're actually feeling, not around a number.
If you're wanting to do a pregnancy announcement instead, we'd shoot earlier, more like 15 to 22 weeks. You've got that little tiny bump starting to show, and you're still really comfortable moving around, so it's a completely different kind of session, but just as special!
You also don't need a due date or exact week picked out when you first reach out. A lot of moms message me before they even know what trimester they'll be shooting in. We just start talking. What you're picturing, where you want to be, who you want part of it. The actual date comes later, once things feel clearer for you.
And if this is your second, third, or fourth pregnancy, I'd love to make it part of a family session. Your belly is still the focus, but everyone gets to be in it, because this pregnancy isn't happening separately from the rest of your life, it's happening in the middle of it, with the kids you already have running around you.
If you're pregnant and even just thinking about maternity photos, that's reason enough to reach out. Whatever week you're in, we'll figure the rest out together, at whatever pace feels right for you.
