It's the season that makes everything about a family photo session easier, and honestly, more real.

There's a reason people plan entire trips around Blue Ridge Mountain leaf season. In the Hendersonville area, peak color usually rolls through the valley in mid-to-late October, with higher elevations changing a few weeks earlier. That means the backdrop for your session is doing genuine, no-effort-required work: golds, deep reds, burnt orange, all of it happening naturally, without a single prop or filter needed. As a documentary-first photographer, I love this season because it means I'm not creating a mood. The mountains are already creating it for me.

Sports seasons wind down, the frantic pace of summer travel eases up, and there's this collective exhale that happens across Hendersonville as a whole . Fall in Hendersonville feels unhurried in a way most of the year doesn't. That matters more than people realize when it comes to photos. A rushed family, squeezed in between three other commitments, photographs differently than a family who has nowhere else to be for the next few hours. Fall gives you that pocket of time. I'd encourage you to actually use it.

My approach is what I call "docutorial," documentary at its core, with just enough intention to make sure the light and moment come together. Fall is basically built for that style. Think: kids kicking through leaf piles, a dad carrying a toddler down an orchard row, steam rising off a cup of coffee, that specific golden hour light that only shows up once the humidity clears out. These aren't moments I have to manufacture. They're just what a Tuesday afternoon looks like here in October.


Where to Go Around Hendersonville


A few of my favorite fall session spots in the area:


Apple orchards scattered around Edneyville and Mills River, especially early to mid-October before peak crowds

DuPont State Forest, if your family wants a mix of trail and waterfall backdrops

Jackson Park and other local greenways for an easy, low-key option close to downtown with lots of trees

Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks, for families who want that big mountain vista in the background (just plan for higher elevations to peak a couple weeks earlier than the valley)


When to Book


If fall photos are on your radar, don't wait until October to reach out. Prime weekends fill up fast once the leaves start turning, and the sweet spot for Hendersonville itself (mid to late October) is a narrow window. I'd recommend reaching out by late summer to lock in a date while there's still flexibility.


Fall doesn't just look good in photos. It feels good to be in. Cooler air, slower days, a family actually present with each other instead of rushing to the next thing. That's the kind of story I want to tell.
