Winter doesn't get enough credit as a family photo season. Most people think their options shrink once the leaves are gone and the temperature drops, so they wait it out until spring comes around again. But some of the warmest, most genuine family photos I take all year happen in December and January, indoors, with nobody worrying about wind chill or frozen fingers.
Here's why I think cozy beats cold, and why an indoor winter session might be exactly what your family needs.
You're Not Fighting the Weather
Outdoor sessions in a Western NC winter mean short daylight windows, unpredictable cold snaps, and kids who check out the second their hands go numb. An indoor session removes all of that. Nobody's rushing because the light is fading at 5pm. Nobody's distracted by being cold. You get the full hour of actual presence instead of everyone silently counting down until they can get back in the car.
Your Own Home Tells a Truer Story
This is the one people don't expect: some of my favorite winter sessions happen right in a family's living room. Kids in their own space, in their pajamas if that's the vibe, sprawled on the same couch they fight over every night. A documentary approach thrives here. I'm not setting a scene, I'm just there while your family does what it already does: reading together, making a mess in the kitchen, tangled up on the rug by the fireplace. Ten years from now, that's the photo that hits different, not because it's polished, but because it's exactly what your life actually looked like.
The Light Is Actually Better Than You'd Think
Winter light through a big window has a softness to it that's hard to get any other time of year. No harsh midday sun, no squinting. Just a gentle, even glow that's incredibly flattering, especially for newborns or babies who aren't up for a bundled-up outdoor session yet. If you've been holding off on photos because your baby arrived in November or December, an indoor winter session might actually be the easiest time to do it.
What This Looks Like in Practice
A typical indoor winter session with me might include:
Getting ready together, morning coffee in hand
Everyone in comfortable, cozy layers (think knits and soft textures, not stiff holiday outfits). Something you'd wear around the house to lounge in.
Real moments around the house: baking, reading, playing a game
A few intentional, quieter portraits by a window or accent chair/fireplace
Kids being kids, mess and all!!!
When to Book
Winter sessions tend to be less competitive to book than fall, which means more flexibility on dates. If you've got a space in mind, whether that's your own home or a mountain cabin rental, reach out and we can figure out timing that works for your family's actual life, not just the calendar.
Cold outside doesn't have to mean cold photos. Some of the best family storytelling happens exactly where you already feel most like yourselves: inside, together, unhurried.
