People think family photos mean cleaning like relatives are about to knock on the door. Suddenly every crumb, every toy, every sock feels like evidence of failure.

But the mess isn’t the problem. The mess is the whole point.

Your everyday piles are proof that humans actually live here.

Proof of life looks like:

  • The stack of heavily used books on the table
  • Laundry basket full of clothes
  • Dishes drying by the sink
  • Fingerprints on the fridge and art taped to the walls
  • Crayon on the walls
  • Pile of shoes by the back door

Nothing needs to be spotless. It just needs to feel lived in.

You only need light and a little space to sit together.

That’s it.

If you want a tiny bit of prep:

  • Open blinds! Natural light or lower lamp lighting > overhead lights
  • Clear one couch or bed
  • Toss random clutter in a basket for later you to deal with
  • Resist the urge to make it all "perfect"

Not everything has to be picked up. Not every corner needs to be spotless. When your kids are older, you won’t remember a clean floor. You’ll remember how your home looked when it held the busy, loud, growing version of your family.

So don’t clean for me. Don’t clean for the camera. Let your life show.

That’s the magic.
